Fejo forges Warriors to historic hoodoo shutdown of Sturt

Beyond 2015 was the last time the Woodville Warriors defeated the Sturt Sabres in the Womens - it took a championship player of multiple clubs to end the reign of the Sabres over the Warriors. The Castle at St Clair witnessing a Warriors win 78-69 over the Sturt Sabres.

Jasmin Fejo was the unstoppable force in the final term but it was newly arrived import Laaura Erikstrup with 11 points in the first half who impressed in an enthralling battle with import for the Sabres Sydney Mech (15 points in the first half for 17 points, eight rebounds and three steals). The match was evenly poised at the half 39-34 with the Warriors just in front with no Erin Phillips for the second consecutive match.

The third term saw the Sabres strike back via Paige Padroth who caused some damage to them in the corresponding fixture last season grabbing 12 second half points to finish with 17 points and five assists to help tie the scores 52-52 a piece with one to play.

Scores remained tense and tight with normally in previous meetings the Sabres running away to beyond the twenty point mark - today would be different as Fejo after nine points and starting on the bench due to football commitments early in the day found her “championship” mode with a second half of 17 points and four rebounds to win it for the Warriors.

Fejo was the ANZAC Round Medallist with 26 points, seven rebounds and three steals and was well supported by Erikstrup, Genna Anderson-Abbey consistent again with 10 points, 13 rebounds, four steals, Jordan Hunter backing up her Friday performance with 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists and Naomi Allotey posted nine points, 13 rebounds and four assists.

WOODVILLE WARRIORS 78 (Fejo 26, Erikstrup 15, Anderson-Abbey, Hunter 10)

Daisy delight as Eastern edge past Norwood to snap thirteen

The Eastern Mavericks snapped a thirteen game losing streak to the Norwood Flames edging past the Norwood Flames for the first time since 2017 - 74-71 at St Francis De Sales.

The Mavs got a great start 23-13 recognising the mis-matches of Aspen Williston and Morgan Yaeger as the star guard produced 17 points in the first half despite a troublesome back injury - for Williston it was her best first half of the season with 11 points and eight rebounds. The steady hand of Amanda Paschal for the Flames kept them in touch at the half 44-41 thanks to her 16 point contribution.

The teams went blow for blow across the third in early part of the fourth with contrary to the last few outings the Mavs getting some much needed help offensively for Yaeger. Teenage star on the rise Daisy Hocking (Seven points, six assists and rebounds) got motoring and along with Williston (20 points and 13 rebounds) and another point outs of thin air from Airle Ramsey cameo (nine points all from beyond the arc) kept the scoreboard ticking over.

In the final minutes - Hocking made a big two then made one of two from charity stripe to edge them in front. The Flames drew up the play to send it to overtime with Paschal (26 points, nine rebounds and five assists) feeding another teenager on the rise in Annaliese Elliot (five points and eight rebounds) who missed the three point attempt. With the Mavs regaining possession fouled on the defensive possession - Yaeger took possession herself and closed out the win by looking after the ball with a sideline dribble to break the thirteen game streak.

Yaeger held firm during the full match to finish with 18 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and three steals to be awarded the ANZAC Round Medal.

A minor hand injury in the third quarter to Black after 16 in the first half opened the door for someone else to step up for either team. Experienced duo Riley Harrap and Trey McBride (12 points each) along with spark plug Darcy McNamara (Nine first half points) gave the Flames the early lead 16-18. The comeback at home was led by captain Freddy Webb (eight first half points) to bring it back to 42-43 at the half.
