The NBL1 South community is today celebrating the career of one of its most respected and accomplished leaders, with Richard Hill announcing his retirement as Head Coach of the Mount Gambier Pioneers.

After 319 games at the helm, Hill will step down from the role after 13 years of service to the Castec Rural Pioneers. His tenure has been one of sustained excellence and deep community connection, guiding the program to success on and off the court.

Taking the reins in 2012, Hill oversaw a golden era for the club, highlighted by five straight SEABL Conference Championships, three National Titles, and four Coach of the Year honours. His leadership also steered the Pioneers through their transition into NBL1 South, where they remained consistent finals contenders. Known for blending tactical acumen with genuine care for his players, Hill earned the admiration of athletes, peers, and fans alike.

Pioneers President, Tom Kosch, paid tribute to Hill’s impact, reflecting on the legacy he leaves behind:

“Since his arrival in 2012, Richard will step down as one of the most successful head coaches at the NBL1 level and leaves an imprint on our club that goes far beyond the championship success and an incredible win loss record.

Our club is extremely grateful for the commitment and service Richard has made in the basketball and wider community over his 13 year tenure with the Pioneers.

Richard leaves a legacy built on hard work both on and off the court and has been the definition and leader of Pioneer Passion since he arrived.”

While Hill steps away from the head coaching role, his influence on Mount Gambier basketball and the wider NBL1 South community will endure through the many players he has mentored and the culture he helped build.

The NBL1 South congratulates Richard Hill on an outstanding coaching career and thanks him for his immense contribution to the league and the sport.
